Abstract:
Social media has become an integral part of students’ daily lives. While it provides platforms for communication, collaboration, and learning, it can also negatively affect productivity and academic performance if not managed properly. This study explores the influence of social media usage on students’ time management and productivity, highlighting both positive and negative aspects.
Introduction:
With the rise of platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, students are increasingly spending hours on social media daily. Previous studies have shown that excessive use can lead to procrastination and decreased focus on academic tasks. However, social media can also facilitate learning through educational content, peer discussions, and group study coordination.
Methodology:
A survey was conducted among 100 undergraduate students aged 18-24. Participants were asked about their daily social media usage, study habits, and perceived impact on productivity. Data was analyzed using basic statistical tools to identify trends and correlations.
Results:
- 65% of students reported spending more than 3 hours daily on social media.
- 40% felt that social media positively impacted their learning through educational content.
- 55% admitted that frequent notifications disrupted their study sessions.
- Time spent on social media negatively correlated with hours devoted to studying.
Discussion:
The findings suggest a dual effect of social media. While it can enhance learning when used intentionally, overuse tends to distract students from academic responsibilities. Strategies like setting time limits, using productivity apps, and creating focused study schedules can help balance usage.
Conclusion:
Social media has both advantages and disadvantages for students’ productivity. Awareness and self-regulation are key to leveraging its benefits while minimizing distractions. Educational institutions can also play a role by promoting digital literacy and effective time management.
